JR Blount arrives in San Diego after five seasons on T.J. Otzelberger's staff at Iowa State, where he was the defensive architect behind one of college basketball's most remarkable turnarounds. A Milwaukee native, Dominican High School alum, and former Loyola Chicago captain, Blount brings 16 years of coaching experience and a relentless commitment to player development.

Three-year captain, two-time team MVP. Earned degrees in psychology and sociology.
Graduate Assistant — UW-Stevens Point
Won the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championship.
Pro Player — Leicester Riders (BBL)
Played professionally in the British Basketball League.
Assistant Coach — Saint Leo University
Progressed from assistant to associate head coach over three seasons.
Dir. of Ops & Asst. Coach — Drake
Four seasons building program infrastructure and recruiting pipelines.
Assistant Coach — Colorado State
Helped sign the highest-rated recruiting class in CSU history. Developed two-time All-MWC player Nico Carvacho.
Assistant Coach — Iowa State
122-52 record, 5 NCAA Tournaments, 2024 Big 12 Championship, Sweet 16 in '22 & '24. Top 15 nationally in KenPom defensive efficiency every year.
Head Coach — San Diego
Named the 15th head coach in program history. The new era begins.
A Milwaukee native and Dominican High School graduate, Coach Blount earned his B.A. from Loyola Chicago and his M.A. in Education from UW-Stevens Point. He and his wife Ashley have three daughters — Maya, Zuri, and Gema.
